The Secret Self of Pan Gu
Part personal history, part philosophical meditation, "The Secret Self of Pan Gu" is a hybrid memoir which adopts the Chinese creation myth of Pan Gu separating heaven and earth as a structuring spine. Into this cosmic framework, the narrator weaves together personal memory, cultural reflection, contemporary psychoanalysis, and dream fantasies as an organic whole. By mapping an intimate journey of self-awareness onto the birth of an ordered universe, the project explores the profound philosophical mutuality between personal reality and the cosmos, the individual and the totality. To illuminate this connection, the narrative draws from ancient Chinese philosophers Laozi and Zhuangzi, as well as Western thinkers Carl Jung and T.S. Eliot. In form, the work fluidly dissolves boundaries—blending poetry and prose, fiction and nonfiction, and incorporating Chinese ideograms and their etymologies.
